Orkney’s past surrounds you, with the legacy of a sophisticated Neolithic people, a fierce, yet cultured, Viking society, and the islands’ vital part in two global conflicts all still visible, accessible and, in many cases, tangible.
We’re immensely proud of our heritage in Orkney, but we also love to share it with others, so you’ll find a wealth of information here to help you unlock the stories, mysteries and legends of our islands.

The neighbourhood
South Ronaldsay is a peaceful island, the village St Margarets Hope is 3 miles away where there is a nice restaurant called Robertsons and a lovely art and craft shop called The Workshop & Loft Gallery.
We have Tomb of the Eagles on South Ronaldsay and Hoxa Tapestry Gallery. There are some lovely coastal walks including South Ronaldsay coastal walk which goes along the cliffs and you can reach this from Newark Bay – the beach you can see from Wheems 7 mins walk away.
Getting around
There are regular buses from the village St Margarets Hope to Kirkwall and Stromness and everywhere in between. It is half an hour to Kirkwall and 50mins to Stromness. St Margarets Hope is 3 miles away so it is walkable and there is a taxi company in the village if you don’t have a car. Causeway Taxis (Alec and Jaqueline Rosie) can be contacted on 01856 831 444.
