Welcome to Wild Orcadian at Wheems Organic Farm. It’s been quite a journey to get here! But we are excited to continue what this special and lovely 16 acre organic farm over looking over the sea has to offer!
For ten years we have run an off grid ecologically minded yurt and shepherd’s hut accommodation site called Wild Northumbrian – this is still very much alive and well and run by good friends of ours.
Sitting now on beach under the big Orkney sky, making the most of the clear spell of weather wondering how we went from ‘lets look for a place to live roughly somewhere north’, to finding ourselves ‘up and moved’ to South Ronaldsay Orkney.
Its funny the perceptions you have of the place you think fits to call home, and that feeling of knowing – then you find somewhere just a big bit special, this is why we moved to Wheems Organic Farm. It has a touch of magic about it, soul is the closest word I can match. We are hoping to go with that feeling and add what we have and know from Wild Northumbrian, the place we have just left. A huge big learning curve for us in all ways.
Our children between starting school have been designated hen keepers, the hens are named, cuddled and sung too… well it seems to work and we have our first eggs to share with incoming guests.
I seem to be designated decorator/ maintenance person although the migrating birds passing through the farm are a definite distraction at times, a flock of Gold crest this morning, me scrambling for a picture!
Also trying to not be too goofy over the seals in the bay below the farm. I hope the magic of seeing them watching you from afar never wears off.
Our neighbours have been so kind and helpful since we have arrived, a real lovely Orkney welcome which we are so grateful for.
Heading into winter with no concept of an Orkney winter wondering how we will fair, even on the wet days the view and sound of the sea seem to wash away the stuff you worry about. We have a list plenty to be doing and are looking forward to running the place this year.
